Instrument: Chart viewer
The Chart viewer provides a graphical view of a chart, a representation of the
current position, as well as any loaded waypoints, tracks, and routes.
The Chart viewer will show the currently loaded chart, or a blank screen if one is not loaded.
Overlayed on the chart are a number of useful features:
- If a chart is loaded, it's name and a brief description of the chart will be shown across the top.
- The Zoom control panel is at the bottom. It shows the current zoom level and allows you to zoom in and out.
- In the bottom right corner is a small green box showing the latitude and longitude of the position
of the mouse pointer when it is over a chart.
- In addition to displaying charts, the Chart viewer allows you to place, move, and edit
waypoints and routes
by simply dragging them with the mouse or with a detailed position editor. The name of the waypoint or route
is shown if the mouse hovers over it.
Just like with any other instrument in Mariner, clicking the right mouse button will show the options:
- Select chart... will display the following choices:
- ...from list will pop open a new window. On the right is the list of
available charts and on the left is a setting
for manual or automatic chart selection. There are several possible combinations of
settings:
- Selecting manual and a chart from the available list will display
that chart.
- Selecting automatic and NOT selecting a chart from the list will
cause the system to attempt to find and display the most detailed chart
containing the current position. If the current position is unknown or
is not on any available chart then no chart will be selected.
- Selecting automatic and then choosing a chart from the list will
act as a hint to the system. If the chart selected contains the current
position then it will be displayed. If it does not then the hint will be
ignored and the system will default to the fully automatic behavior
as described above.
- ...for position or waypoint will pop open a new window that will allow you to
select the best available chart for a given position. The position may be either the
current GPS position, any loaded waypoint, or latitude/logitude coordinates.
- ...smaller scale will switch to a chart that is at a lower scale (and thus
is more detailed) if one exists in the system.
- ...larger scale will switch to a chart that is at a higher scale (and thus
is less detailed) if one exists in the system.
- ...alternate at current GPS position will switch to the next best chart
at the current GPS position. Mariner will always attempt to provide the best (most detailed)
available chart for any given position.
- ...alternate at current mouse position will switch to the next best chart
at the position currently under the mouse. Mariner will always attempt to provide the best (most detailed)
available chart for any given position.
- Select chart colors is available for KAP format charts only. This will allow you
to choose the color pallette the chart is displayed in. The pallettes available depend on the
particular chart but generally include "Paper Chart", "Night", "Day", "Dusk", etc.
- Print current view will print the currently displayed section of the chart.
The chart will be scaled appropriately to fill the paper specified.
- Print whole chart will print the whole chart. The chart will be scaled
appropriately to fill the paper specified.
- Show active track selects whether the
currently active track should be shown.
- Show currently loaded tracks/marks selects whether any
loaded tracks and
loaded marks should be shown. To select individual
tracks and marks to show see the next menu selection
- Select loaded tracks/marks to show selects individual
loaded tracks and
loaded marks to be displayed.
- Show zoom panel controls the display of the zoom control panel at the bottom
of the Chart Viewer window.
- Show chart name controls the display of the chart name and
description at the top of the Chart Viewer window.
- Show current position controls the display of the boat symbol at the current
GPS position.
- Center map on position controls whether Mariner should continuously adjust
the chart display so that the current position is visible. If this option is turned
off then the chart will not follow the current position and if the current position
falls outside the chart will not automatically load the appropriate chart.
